An acid wash is not a deep clean. It is a controlled removal of the very top layer of your plaster or pebble finish, taking mineral scale and staining with it. That is why it works when nothing else has, and also why it is not something to do casually — the surface is a finite resource, and every acid wash spends a little of it. A well-maintained pool goes years between them, and some never need one.
The other reason people end up here is water chemistry rather than appearance. Arizona pools are topped off far more often than they are refilled, and every top-off adds minerals that evaporation then concentrates. Do that for enough summers and total dissolved solids climb to the point where the water simply will not hold a balance any more — you add chemicals, nothing moves, and the pool stays dull. At that point draining is not a cosmetic decision, it is the only fix.

Assess whether you actually need one
We look at the surface and the water first. Light waterline scale is often a tile-cleaning job, not an acid wash. If a surface clean or a tile service will get you there, we will tell you — it is cheaper for you and it leaves your finish intact.
Drain, timed around the weather
An empty plaster pool sitting in Arizona sun is a genuine risk, not a theoretical one, and so is a drained pool over a high water table. The drain is scheduled so the pool is not standing empty longer than the work needs — and on a hauled-water or well property, scheduled around your water delivery as well.
Acid wash the surface
The finish is washed down to take off mineral buildup, staining and discolouration. Done properly this is even across the whole surface, because a partial wash leaves a visible line exactly where you stopped.
Inspect while it is empty
This is the part that gets skipped and should not. An empty, dry pool is the only time anyone can properly see cracks, delamination, worn plaster, and the true condition of the fittings. If there is something you should know about your shell, this is when we find it — and telling you is part of the job.
Refill and balance from zero
Fresh water, then a full chemical balance built from scratch rather than adjusted from whatever was there before. A new fill is genuinely a clean slate and worth setting up properly.

How do I know if my pool needs an acid wash or just a good clean?
Two signals. If the staining and scale are on the surface itself rather than the waterline tile, and brushing plus regular chemistry has not touched them over several weeks, cleaning is not going to get there. The second is chemical: if you are adding balancing chemicals and the readings barely move, total dissolved solids have likely climbed past the point where the water will respond, which only a drain and refill resolves. How often should a pool be acid washed?
As rarely as possible. An acid wash removes a thin layer of the plaster or pebble finish, so it is a resource you spend rather than a service you schedule — a well-maintained Arizona pool can go many years between washes, and some never need one. Anyone recommending one annually is selling, not advising. Consistent weekly chemistry, particularly keeping on top of calcium hardness in Valley water, is what pushes the interval out.
My house is on hauled water or a well. Can you still do this?
